Acne is a very common problem for teenagers but also for some adults. For many people the physical pain of active acne lesions is a minor inconvenience compared with the immense damage they do to your self confidence. To help combat the problem of acne, science has put a great deal of time and effort into developing an effective acne treatment.
A wide range of acne treatments
It usually takes some testing and trying different treatments before finding the acne treatment that works best for each and every individual.Luckily, there are genuinely hundreds of possible choices available to help you in treating your acne problems.
Most acne treatments fall into one of these categories:
Mild cleanser – These products are normally readily available over the counter in your local drug store.Although they contain mild ingredients, they are very capable of cleansing your face of dirt and bacteria. Good news as both are a main cause of acne.
Chemical – Available either over the counter or on prescription, these products contain one of several different chemicals that are effective in eliminating bacteria, thus reducing the occurrence of acne.Favourites include both salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide.
Prescription – The treatment of acne is very well served by a vast range of available prescription drugs. As these acne treatments work in different ways you can be sure that no matter how severe your own acne is, there will be a treatment that can help. These medicines are prescription only and are therefore, not available over the counter. To get these medicines you must first of all see a doctor or dermatologist.
Other – A vast category of acne treatments which includes light therapy, laser resurfacing, chemical peels, and pulse light treatments. Most of these types of acne treatments are available primarily through a doctor, dermatologist, or other skin specialist.
Stay clean, stay clear
Perhaps the most important thing to remember when it comes to acne treatments is to keep your skin clean and bacteria-free.Bacteria are the single most important cause of acne. Keep that under control and your acne will also be easier to control.
When it comes to keeping your skin clean, gentleness pays dividends, you can rub but don’t scrub. In fact, the harder you scrub the more likely you are to irritate your skin, which in turn can lead to more bacteria and more acne lesions.By gently cleaning your skin once or twice a day you are fulfilling two important requirements for treating acne, you are keeping your skin clean in a non irritating way.
For all the different acne treatments out there, many companies will sell there own version of a particular treatment which will contain the same or very similar ingredients to another companies product.A sign of a very good acne treatment is one which allows you to thoroughly clean your face without causing irritation or difficult side effects like, dryness, flaking or itching.
Always be ready to change to a different product if you are experiencing unpleasant side effects with the one you are using.Irrespective of which products you choose to use, it must be remembered that it will take time for them to work. You should be prepared to stick with a product for a reasonable length of time to properly evaluate it’s effectiveness. If after a few weeks or so, you are not happy with the results, then move on to another treatment.
